Kawa is what we do, tikanga is how we do it. Tikanga is born out of kawa – the underpinning protocols, or recognised ways of doing things, that are to be observed. Kawa does not change.

Kawa is like lofty values humans aspire to but don't always know how to enact. Tikanga” breaks these lofty values into smaller achievable practices and processes. Those practices and processes are like frameworks – to guide, protect, support and understand something in your environment.
